Is TAF or METAR more accurate? ›

Ultimately, you will want to use both. However, a TAF is generally more reliable than a METAR, as it is less likely to be auto-generated. The general guideline is that a TAF will override a METAR (unless the METAR has a trend report appended to it).

Reported in a four figure group (e.g. 0400 = 400 metres; 8000 = 8 km) up to but excluding 10 km; 9999 = 10km or more; 0000 = less than 50 metres visibility.

The Aviation Weather Center (AWC) is tasked with forecasting these potentially hazardous weather conditions to help ensure the most accurate and up-to-date weather information is available for pilots across the flying community.

Localized Aviation MOS Program forecasts conditions at 1,850 airports, with greater accuracy than TAFs.

These reports are issued at each reporting location every hour and are considered valid weather information for 1 hour. Each METAR includes the airport identifier, time of observation, wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather phenomena, sky conditions, temperature, dew point, and altimeter setting.

Light and variable wind or wind speeds of less than 5 knots are expressed by 9900.

60000 translates to a trace of liquid precipitation during the three- or six-hour period. 70066 indicates the total 24-hour liquid precipitation ending at 12Z (in hundredths of an inch).

For example, P0009 would indicate 9/100 of an inch of precipitation fell in the past hour; P0000 would indicate that less than 1/100 of an inch of precipitation (considered a trace) fell in the past hour. This group is omitted if no precipitation occurred since the last METAR.

If the wind varies 60° or more, the direction will be indicated with a V (e.g. 120V190). Next two digits Mean speed and units (KT=knots, KMH=kilometers per hour, or MPS=meters per second). G=gust as needed (2 or 3 digits). Calm will be indicated by 00000XXX (XXX will be replaced by the appropriate units).

What does RA mean in METAR? ›

SH means showers and RA means rain. So the present weather is a light rain shower.

4) PK WND. This code stands for peak wind. You may find this code when conditions at the airport are gusting consistently or have had strong sustained winds over the course of the observation period. A "PK WND" value will indicate the wind direction, velocity, and time after the hour that it was observed.

METAR reports are observed weather conditions while the TAF indicates forecast conditions. Both are lines of text made up of coded data groups separated by spaces.

The Terminal Area Forecast ( TAF ) is the official FAA forecast of aviation activity for U.S. airports.

TAFs are issued at least four times a day, every six hours, for major civil airfields: 0000, 0600, 1200 and 1800 UTC, and generally apply to a 24- or 30-hour period, and an area within approximately five statute miles (8.0 km) (or 5 nautical miles (9.3 km) in Canada) from the center of an airport runway complex.
