Queen of Scotland Mary Stuart travels to France with four ladies-in-waiting to secure her politically strategic engagement to the king's son, Prince Francis. Mary and Francis share a mutual attraction, even though he has reservations about the wisdom of an alliance with Scotland. Complicating issues is Bash, Francis' illegitimate half-brother whom Mary finds herself drawn to in spite of herself. The French Court is also full of less romantic challenges for Mary, who finds her engagement -- and life -- threatened until she finds an ally in a mysterious shrouded guide. With all that she faces, Mary rallies, readying herself to rule and trying to find a balance between the demands of her country and those of her heart.

In 1557, Young Mary Stuart arrives to France accompanied by Prince Francis and her three best friends. She is to be engaged with Prince Francis to get the French help needed to protect Scotland. However, things between Mary and Francis are not simple and, although they are attracted to eachother, Francis remains hesitant. Also, Bash, Francis' half-brother, complicates matters when he starts falling for Mary. This, together with King Henry's infidelity, makes Queen Mary seek help from the seer Nostradamus. He scares her with a prophecy about her son's death so she becomes determined to save Francis' life at any cost. Conspiracy, sabotage, mystery and sex show the details of the French Court as Mary learns to deal with each and every one.

Sometimes shows that borrow inspiration from other television series succeed by blending together separate elements to create something entirely new and enjoyable. The CWs new drama, Reign, certainly bears resemblance to past shows, with a cliched love triangle reminiscent of The Vampire Diaries (2009-present) and the same political maneuvering style of Gossip Girl (2007-2012). Unfortunately, Reign fails live up to these predecessors.
